For over 25 years, CLEARING has provided an invaluable service to the environmental and place-based education community.
As an independent publication, CLEARING embodies the accumulated knowledge, experience and passion of a region. It has documented the efforts of community groups, agencies, businesses, schools, and teachers and educators to build an ecologically sound, socially just and economically stable community.
In 2009, we reorganized and re-energized the magazine to meet the needs of the 21st century. As we expand our network, we will continue to share the collective knowledge, experiences, perspectives, and tools that will support teachers in the classroom and field who are working to create a better world
CLEARING is an online and print publication for teachers that shares their best ideas, activities and resources for helping students gain a greater understanding of their community and environment. Published continuously online, with a printed compendium issue once per year, CLEARING is a unique and valuable resource that supports environmental education efforts in schools and community organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest. Frequent topics include school gardening, watershed restoration, schoolyard habitat, energy conservation, recycling and sustainability.
Project: We are building a regional network of teachers and educators who bring environmental and community-based learning opportunities to students of all ages. The project is intended to increase the ability of CLEARING and partner organizations to share information and resources that are vital to the success of those efforts.
Impact on community: This project gives local teachers access to the best ideas and teaching strategies from around the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and offers time-saving research on new resources that will inspire and enhance teachers’ lesson plans and community-based projects.
The primary focus of CLEARING is exploring the programs and issues related to the western U.S. and Canada, with a particular emphasis on the Pacific Northwest. But even though many of the featured programs and issues have a western North America slant, the lessons that can be learned from them, along with the resources reviewed in every issue, are applicable anywhere.
