Source Materials for Products Social Studies—Grades 9-12
In the classroom, on the schoolgrounds, or on a short walk, have students tell the sources of objects in their environment (e.g., Flagpole: coal, iron, coke, paint made of chemicals; Glass: sand, limestone, NaCO2). Encyclopedias and library books are helpful in providing answers. This activity can be done in reverse, i.e., what could be done with certain resources that we see (birds, trees, grasses, field, water). Do strong feelings for conservation ensue?—Reprinted from a past issue of CLEARING.
